Tentative trade deal a strong positive for North Dakota agriculture
Heitkamp wrong on Trump trade policy impacts
Bismarck, N.D. – A tentative deal with China on a new trade agreement holds the promise of significant reductions in America’s trade deficit while substantially increasing agricultural commodity purchases. Representative Kevin Cramer, and candidate for U.S. Senate, says this is great news for North Dakota farmers.

“China has pledged to increase purchases in order to reduce the multibillion-dollar trade imbalance and this can only help our North Dakota farmers and ranchers,” Cramer said. “This could be a game-changer.”

North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring also characterized the development as very positive for North Dakota. “We know that North Dakota commodities can be part of the solution on the current trade imbalance. We have the commodities to help make up the difference which will be a major win for us given China’s proposed commitment to increase purchases.”

Simon Wilson, executive director of the North Dakota Trade Office agrees with the potential benefit to North Dakota coming from the deal. “North Dakota companies have strong relationships with their Chinese counterparts and a deal that breaks down barriers to trade is a win-win for North Dakota and China. At a high-level, we believe this potential deal, if enacted, would be a tremendous win for North Dakota ag producers and related businesses.”

It’s unfortunate that while North Dakota agriculture and trade leaders agree the state will benefit from the deal, Senator Heidi Heitkamp put short-term politics in front of long-term economic gain for our state and our country.  “Senator Heitkamp was wrong when she claimed the President’s trade policies would negatively impact American farmers and ranchers,” said Tim Rasmussen, communications director for the Cramer campaign.  “It turns out the opposite is coming true. Her politically motivated short-sighted view has only served to create fear and destabilize markets.”
