Heidi Heitkamp Jeopardizes Pension Reform with New Ad

Sep 10 2018
BISMARCK, ND – Following the Heitkamp campaign’s launch of a new ad attacking Cramer on pension reform, Kevin Cramer issued the following statement expressing deep disappointment in her decision to jeopardize pension reform by making it a political issue:
“The Butch Lewis Act, which helps ensure our workers are secure in their retirement, will require bipartisan support to pass,” Cramer said. “I have been working with Republican leadership in both houses to build Republican support for the legislation, but politicizing the bill undermines my ability to secure the necessary votes for passage. This situation doesn’t diminish my support but certainly makes my job tougher.”
Kevin Cramer has long been a champion for pension reform. He was the second Republican in Congress to cosponsor the Butch Lewis Act, which allows federal loans to distressed pension funds thereby continuing to support benefits earned by retirees over a lifetime of work. His support was lauded by James P. Hoffa, general president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in an opinion editorial published in The Hill and also in a direct letter to Congressman Cramer.
“On behalf of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, I want to express our gratitude to you for cosponsoring H.R. 4444, the Rehabilitation for Multiemployer Pensions Act, also known as the ‘Butch Lewis Act,” Hoffa wrote in the letter to Cramer. “For many Teamster retirees, this is a fight for their lives. We have much work ahead of us, but we are heartened to know that we have friends on both sides of the aisle who are willing to fight for retirees.”
“Injecting partisanship into such an important issue and jeopardizing the livelihood of 1.5 million retirees is just flat wrong,” said Tim Rasmussen, Cramer for Senate Communications Director. “Clearly Sen. Heitkamp is willing to risk meaningful reform in order to help her reelection campaign. Heitkamp playing politics with our workers’ livelihood is the last thing they need.”
